Shadows (2007)
Visit the Press page for reviews and interviews
Placing among CKUA's top 100 Albums of 2007, Shadows cruises through the ether as well as the underworld with fellow artists like Jane Siberry and even Tom Waits. Singer/songwriter Danielle French is possessed of a diverse and slightly surreal talent- the material on Shadows has been described as “beautiful strangeness”, as Danielle is found uncovering melodies that are somewhat strange, yet somehow familiar.
Shadows was co-produced by the multi-multi-talented Jonathan Lewis (the Plaid Tongued Devils), who also played violin, accordion, mandolin and keyboards. Peter Moller and Diane Kooch, of Kris Demeanors’ Crack Band, formed the rhythm section. Madman guitarists, Martin Tielli (Rheostatics) played bizarre and beautiful electric guitars and contributed his gorgeous voice and Diego Medina (Chad Van Gaalen) added just the right amount of strange synth sounds to take this project into outer space. Shadows was completed thanks for the generous support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
Time to Kill placed 2nd runner up in the Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Competition in 2005 and made it to the semi-finals in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition. And Descending appeared in the TV show Falcon Beach in January, 2007.
Some of this material evolved from Danielle's 2000 EP release foreshadow- click on the link to this project to hear how these songs evolved!

Descending
Set to one of Danielle's original songs of the same name, and found as a DVD enhancement on Danielle's 2007 release Shadows, Avalon represents a true collaborative effort, blending the artistic genres of music, dance and film. Danielle approached local Calgary dancer/ choreographer Anita Miotti and well-known Canadian artist/filmmaker Allan Harding MacKay, who she met during his involvement with One Yellow Rabbit’s production of Somalia Yellow, to contribute their individual talents to this project. Masterfully edited by Neil Evenson, the resulting film is a hypnotic journey into an alternate universe.
This film enjoyed screenings at the Calgary International Film Festival, and the herland feminist film and video festival.
